the harbinger of puns
the harbinger of puns
AGE: 13
GENDER: Female
TEAM: Titans
SIDE: Hero
OCCUPATION: Pet
HISTORY: The time of horses and spears, primitive rockets launched by blackpowerd. The time of emperors and and dynasty's, and before long range communications. A young princess was to be wed to a great general in an effort to forge a peace by combining the families. A duty meant for those of this princess' standing. You might think it was unfortunate, but that was simply how things were done. And one could hardly think it was forced. She was absolutely smitten by the stories of the man, and constantly spoke of it to her escorts.
The young princess spoke excitedly, wondering if he had any battle scars, what sort of stories he had. How big his armour would be on her. She prayed to her ancestors, and her guardians, not for guidance, but for blessings. She knew what she wanted, and wished it to come through. However, this young princess was never destined to wed her beloved to be.
Along the way, the princess was killed by an arrow loosed by an assassin. She did not suffer, their aim had been true and swift. It was her death, the death of a promised princess for peace, framed upon the her betrothed's allies, that rocked the kingdom's to their core, that culminated ultimately in a united land.
That is the end of the young princess, and the beginning of our heroine. In order to keep her spirit appease, one that had been so set upon her destination, her body would be transported back to her family's ancient burial grounds, to rest among her ancestors. Unfortunately her body never made it, nor her bearers.
The girl's body rose, to some a miracle, to those that know, despair, as she did not come back... right. She came back wrong, very wrong, and became a monster that feasted upon souls. This monster would later become known as a Jiangshi. As time passed, legend passed down of the monster, and turning towards modern times, something... unprecedented happened.
The Oracle caught wind of this creature, and arranged a confrontation of this monster, playing off of a hunch. In recent times this creature had been seen observing, learning, and even interacting with others in a way that was not predatory. Curiosity had been born in this creature. When this monster accepted the proposal, it was sent to Shift, while young, had shown many, and thus... the Teen Titans leader received a new pet.
FAMILY: Being an undead creature, Jian has no real family, not even a necromancer to call parent. Though it's possible that the original owner of the body, the young princess slain so long ago, may have blood left in the world.
PERSONALITY: Jian has simple tastes, and is curious about a great many things. While it may seem the only thing on her mind is what you'd expect a zombie to think of, food, there are other aspects. Not a particularly bright individual, Jian acts rather animalesque, though she can understand the spoken word. Her preferred form of humour, is of course, the simplest humour across the world, puns. Of course, most of them refer to her undead state. Jian accompanies each and every single one she makes with a stiff little grin and a 'hee', to inform to others that yes, indeed she made word play. Ever curious, Jian has a tendency to ask embarrassing questions, and doesn't quite understand what being alive is. As silly as she may seem, there is a monster lurking behind the goofy grin and bad puns.
DISLIKES: Jian doesn't understand death, but she does understand fear, and dislikes seeing those she deems as not food, friend, in such a state. Unless of course, it's from her.
DREAMS: Jian doesn't much understand something beyond the now, and thus a dream and long goal is a bit out of reach. She does want to learn how to swing and see-saw sometime though.

But I try
But I try
BODY STRUCTURE: Jian's body while alive belonged to a young girl Not quite into a woman's grocery. Small and scrawny, Jian really wouldn't be much to look at if it weren't for a few choice, rather distinct things. Get skin is a greyish purple, and visibly dry. Her eyes are a foggy yellow, and sunken into their sockets, surrounded by dark circles. A little less noticeable are a few other choice features. Her teeth are needle sharp, and angled inwards to trap anything she bites into. Her hands are spindly with elongated fingers, her nails have become claws and likewise elongated, though they are often retracted. A peculiar odor hangs in the air about her. Get hair is messy, wiry, and uncombed, around shoulder length with forks of gray throughout. Not exactly a bad smell, but a distinct one. Embalming fluid runs in her veins in the stead of blood, once used to keep her body from rotting. Much of these features become more or less monstrous, depending on her physics or mental stress. Relaxed, fed and content, she could almost pass for human. Hungry, angry and scared, she looks straight out of a horror film, complete with an unhinged jaw, Ang the smell of the embalment fluid becoming harsh.
STYLE: What Jian wears was once a luxurious robe, coloured purple, the gold embroidery, little more than a simple impression left, fallen off in time. A tailor could see it is made of silk, and certainly of a craftsmanship befitting of a princess. Her sleeves are long enough to reach past her claws, on which there is a light floral pattern of her nobilitie's flower. As Jian doesn't understand alter-ego, this serves as her costume as well.
PIERCINGS OR TATTOOS: Jian has two tattoos left over from the once living body she possesses, both located on the shoulder blades. On the left, you can make out in the ink an old dialect incribed bearing her ancestor's marks, and her position in the family. On the right, was prep work outlining a similar style of what would have been the young princess' betrothed.
COSTUME: Style
ODDITIES: Quite a bit detailed above. Jian is hardly a living creature, nor is she an non-sentient raving drooling autopiloted toy of a necromancer, or even contain the power of the Black Lantern corp that many undead spawn from. Up close and personal, Jian doesn't necessarily reek, but a sickly sweet odor of emballment fluid hangs about her, as that's what is in the body in the stead of blood, keeping it from rotting away before becoming animate. This can affect people in different ways. In some it causes nausea, in few uncontrollable, others can describe it as burning nose hairs away, but any who know the scent can identify it with no troubles. One thing to note,
is that Jian can suffer a number of wounds that would land another in critical condition. After all, what a flesh wound to a zombie, really.
ABILITIES: Drain - Jian consumes quintessence, electricity, and other varying forms of life energy, absorbing it for her own. Thid is what she truly means by eating another, and what she truly eats as Northrop nutrition did little more than occupy space. Like a normal wound, lost energy can be restored with time and plenty of bed rest, Moe if she's taken more. And like a wound, it can leave irreparable scars, permanent damage, and death. Jian absorbs this from the air around her,
and at a higher rate through touch and bite. Like all things, the wounded are easier prey, the more hurt one is, the easier and faster she drains. The more energy She drains, the more potent all of her abilities become.
Regenerate
Using the stolen energy, Jian can regenerate debilitating injuries that would impede get ability to move around. This appears as if lousy limbs dissolve into at-like shadowy substance that race back to her body, while vaporized limbs and bits will regenerate by a similar shadowy substance appearing in the air near herand closing in on the wounds. Thisroughly includes her clothes, for both modesty reasons given her body's perceived age, and squick reasons considering she's a shambling corpse.
Shadow-walk
Her bread and butter ability. Jian can become a semi-corporeal mass of twisting moving shadows that look like a concentrated swarm of bats. Using it, she can fly, hover and dash at higher speeds than one would think capable. She can also move through walls at a slow rate, assuming there are gaps wide enough for a small bat to squeeze through. When she does do this, her body, clothing, and missing flesh reform with her, though debilitating injuries she still need to use regeneration for. The bat swarm can attack a creature with a thousand cuts. Individually, each cut is little more than a paper cut, but so many in a short time, and you're looking at some dangerous waters.
CONTROL: 3. Jian did choose what to eat and not, but the aura around her is in constant affect, like she's rainy everything around her. 0, it kicks in automatically when she is unable to function at full capacity. 7, Some she can control many of the effects, she isn't very precise with using it as an attack, despite its offensive capabilities
SIDE-AFFECTS: Aside from her obvious physiological affects of being an affront to nature herself, Lights flicker in their sockets, rooms are chilled, ice collects at the corners of windows, and the ever knowing feeling you're in the same room as deadly predator, mark up a few of the side affects, most caused by her draining and devouring the energies of various auras around her. Her primary source of course, is quintessence, life force, present in all things, even other undead, making Jian capable of devouring even them.
WEAKNESSES:Jian has many, but specific weaknesses tied to her supernatural and undead state. Starting off the list is Rice and Salt. Representing purity, these two substances repel her, and she can not cross a solid line of either, without counting each grain first. Likewise, if someone spills salt and she notices, she has a high compulsion to count each one before moving on, allowing her mark to get away. Like you would expect, a holy symbol will repel her under certain circumstances, only while in the hands of a true believer, it will burn her to the touch, deterring her powers. From church bells, to little hand helds, rung with silver and gold, will chase her off, particularly potent in sets of three. Peach wood seems to be an effective way to force her to use energy on regenerating any part hurt by it. The most obvious however, is the tag worn on her forehead. A spell tag with symbols translating roughly to peace, calm, serenity. If removed... so does part of Jian's sentience, and she becomes little more than a rather intelligent predator of all things holy and unholy.
One could say my brain rotted away

INTRODUCTION: A chill passed over a foggy summer evening. All through the tower, not a single mouse stirred. Not a single mouse dared stir. To the occupants, nothing was quite wrong about the feeling. Though it was well past the 80's even so late into the night, one could make their breath out in front of them as they wandered the walls. All throughout, it sounded as if rats were in the walls. The lights flickered in and out, likely blamed on a faulty wiring. The occupants, if only they knew the true terror that awaited them. The terror that lurked just beyond the walls. The true culprit in all things odd about the night.
It wasn't until morning dew touched the grass, that the source of the scratching would be found. The front door, just beyond, just... outside the safety of the halls, black claws scratched. Scritch. Scritch... Scritch!Opening the door, the Titans would find what would become a new member. At first perceived as a monster in old clothing, that would change when a second look after slamming the door shut, would show a peculiar thing... more peculiar that is to say, than a rotten little girl.
The pointed teeth, first assumed as a snarl, was a grin. Her sunken eyes filled with curisity. Her claws no more than thick nails. And a note, attached by an oversized safety pin explaining what this creature was in a bright colour for easy notice. "A creature curious full of life, and true sentience. I've taught her to answer to Jian." The note said. "With regards, and apologies, Orcale. P.S. Invite her in or she can't come in."
