Portia glanced around in interest, noting Han Solo who almost lit up a cigarette to have it immediately taken away by Slave Leia, some weird girl in a Robin-wannabe costume, and a weird green appendage that came a little too close for comfort, going for the punch. These people blatantly using their powers shouldn't shock Batgirl. She had seen plenty of meta-humans before, usually fighting them on the streets. What she had seen most up to this point were more passive powers, however, and not like Athena's shape-changing and green skin, or the girl that dressed up as Zatanna with the shimmering green tendril. She was shocked back to her conversation as the girl in the armor spoke again. Suffering from the flu? For some reason, Batgirl doubted the first introduction, but noted it. This girl seemed to know a great deal, excluding the minor slip of speech. Freelance Investigator? Batgirl smiled at her admittance to masking her identity. At least someone around here had some sense. Everyone else seemed to be perfectly comfortable with making those that they love endangered, or on the other hand, maybe they didn't have anyone left. The thought mildly depressed her, and she took a sip of her punch when Hemlock spoke her mother's name. The shock caused her to sputter in her drink, coughing. Smooth, Portia, smooth. “You work with the JCPD?” As she brushed off her top, she told herself to remember not to show her face to this girl. Her mother was relentless in her search for the identity of the Batgirl, wanting to know who took up her mantle without informing her. Well, that was the last thing that Portia was going to do. 'Oh hey mom, I found your old costume and Dad trained me to be the Batgirl like you used to be! Isn't that cool!' Her mother would kill her, revive her, and then kill her again. There was a welcome distraction as another girl came up to speak with them. What happened next was not what Batgirl had expected, seeing something come over Hemlock's face as she pulled out a sword. The symbol embellished on the steel was what had caught her eye, though. It was identical to the one plastered on her chest. Again, Batgirl found herself stunned.

What's a party without an uninvited guest? Blackhat sat safe and sound somewhere while he finished his master plan to find out who killed his parents once and for all. He would arrest all the heroes. Every one of them. It took years of planning and preparation, but he'd done it. Blackhat had enough blackmail on the right people to get things done. A politician here, a general there, and now he could get everything just right.
The National Guard troops stood ready to move in.
Blackhat was controlling the first drone, but he waited.
A part of his conscience told him to stop. It told him that there was some other way. It told him to not become like THEM. It didn't win. Blackhat held his finger tentatively above the proverbial big red button.
He pressed it.
The first missile streaked from the drone and hit the tower.
"Boom."

Serenity's forehead blazed in the darkened room, the kind of intensity that only followed a particularly strong vision. She growled at what she was seeing. She had been keeping an eye on this particular future as it involved such a violent end. The seer had been hoping that Thomas would listen to his better senses yet it seemed that he would be going through with his plan after all. "RAINBOW WE NEED A BARRIER OVER EVERYONE NOW!"
The National Guard was standing by to arrest anyone with powers, so at least some of the people here could get away with staying behind, or rather their futures -if caught- were not as horrible as some others. They would need a place to hide while this was going down, Serenity was just glad she had the foresight to buy a warehouse apartment -under a false name- in case something like this happened. She just wished she had been more sure about what was happening rather then only have a certainty of events only a minute before everything happened. "WE NEED TO GO NOW, THE NATIONAL GUARD IS ON IT'S WAY!"
She turned to look at Sorina but the dove was already moving without being told, she needed to make sure a way was clear for the blonde to get a clear view of what was going on. Serenity was glad that no one had to much to drink tonight at least. It would help her see future events more clearly, that and no one would have to be carried out of the tower.

Chae was mostly ignoring the goings on, glancing at the pulling of swords for a moment, her green tendrils remaining out and about, ready to stop anyone from stabbing each other, but not willing to butt in on the little altercation. Really, it was amusing to her, seeing someone get so into character for their Halloween costume. Looking over her own Zatanna outfit, she laughed softly, "Don't think I'll be pulling a rabbit out of any hats tonight, unfortunately." The comment was mostly to herself, as she sipped on the spiked punch. Sure, it tasted odd to her but she didn't really care - she expected it to be spiked the second she grabbed it, and would have been extremely disappointed if it wasn't. Unfortunately her drinking was interrupted as Serenity suddenly shouted at her to put up a barrier, getting little more than a blink in response, Chae not making a single movement to do so, though she opened her mouth, only to be cut off by Serenity beginning to shout about the national guard, only further confusing the titan - while technically not completely legal, the Justice League had long since proven that heroing teams are incredibly useful, and had multiple times gone through great stakes to prove that rumors otherwise were usually headed by megalomaniacs. The Titans weren't exactly Young Justice, but they still had founding members with close ties to them. Rainbow knew her history very well when it came to heroes - so the idea of it all wa- It was lucky for everyone as the first missile hit that Chae reacted well and instinctually to fear, and an explosion engulfing the top most part of the tower was enough to cause that. Both hands raised upwards almost instantly, yellow light pouring out of them, matched by her outfit, the colors quickly refilling in yellow on her 'gloves', the other colors left to accents only, "Away from the walls!" She shouted loudly, her normal giddy voice gone, no giggle to punctuate it as usual. The walls were quickly coated in yellow light, making certain to hold everyone in them, "The smaller the stronger! Titans, together!" She directed them in the most authoritative voice she could manage, actually doing it quite well. Another explosion, this one hitting just above the living room - the ceiling above them cracked and began falling, only to bounce off the large yellow shield Chae was holding up, quickly covering the walls, ceiling and floor, shrinking down in areas where it could, 'prompting' people to move closer to the middle of the room, and to her, by making the walls slowly enclose - any want of 'personal space' disregarded in the emergency. The incredibly strong shield didn't crack, none of the force transferred inside of the shield, no heat from the explosions, though the loud bang of explosions did carry inside it. One minute he'd been talking to Annette!Naomi, rubbing his wrists out of habit where the handcuffs had been, and the next he was on the floor, a ringing piercing his ears. Someone was talking - no yelling - no screaming. The words barely came to him as if they'd been sifted through too many filters. His vision blurred when he tried to get up to fast and he stumbled back down to his knees. His mind was whirling. What the Hell was going on? As long as he'd been a Titan, both Towers had always been safe, a refuge of sorts when life was kicking his ass.
His first coherent thought was to find Annette. The real Annette, not the AI software. Naomi, he was certain, could take care of herself. Annette couldn't walk. Whatever she'd been using to walk earlier, what if it had broken? A blast like that - what the Hell had caused that? - could have killed anyone on impact, he thought. He could picture her, his team leader, on the ground, getting soaked in her own blood. He saw red, his fingers clenching into tight fists.
The ringing had faded. He forced himself to his feet, his body protesting. He could see Chae creating a force field, getting the others together inside it. His mind still swam but he managed to force his shaking legs to move. He refused to stand there and stare in terror, and he'd never, not even years after this, admit how scared he was. Before the barrier could stop him, he slipped out of the living room and into the hall. He needed to get to his bow.
His heart pounded in his chest as he picked up speed. Soon he was running down the hall toward the spare room he used when he was in Jump. He forced the door open and scrambled inside, moving to his closet and stripping his costume off as he went. He prided himself in being able to multitask; now was putting that to the test. As he took part of the costume off - yanked it off - he replaced it with part of his uniform. In under a minute, though it frustratingly felt like it took forever, he was Quickshot, clad in yellow and red.
He snatched all the different bows he had and folded them so they could hang on his belt. He slung his quiver over his shoulder, making sure the arrows would secure and wouldn't fall out. He grabbed his communicator as he moved quickly to the room's window. He visibly paled. Why? Why was the National Guard there? He cursed and moved to the bed, kneeling down beside it. He lifted the mattress up and stared for a second or two at what he had concealed there. It was a gun, a pistol his mum had owned for protection. He bitterly thought of how it hadn't protected her. He'd taken it with him when he'd left London, but had never used it.
He grabbed it and checked to see if it was loaded. He didn't know if he should have been comforted that it was loaded, ready to use. Instead he felt unnerved. He'd never particularly cared about taking a bad guy's life or not, but he'd never used the gun. He knew how, but had never felt the need to have it. Now he holstered it to his belt with his bows - a recurve bow and a crossbow. He grabbed his compound bow - it couldn't be folded like his other two. With his free hand, he grabbed his communicator.
"I'll create a diversion, you guys get our of here," Quickshot said before hooking the communicator back to his belt. He used the end of his bow to break some of the window. In a swift movement, he had a trick-arrow notched into place and was already pulling back on the bowstring, taking aim.

It's shocking sometimes how fast games will come to an end when lives are threatened, and while things were tense with the Stone sisters, they were still sisters in the end. At the first realization that Serenity was being completely serious, Annette snapped out of her act, tearing off her blue wig in a hurry, and making a motion towards the group as Chae commanded. She was caught offguard though when her entire spine surged with pain. Her device was malfunctioning already. What timing. A more jaded minded person would've blamed Edward Murphy, but Annette didn't have the capacity. Her mind was going in every which way, realizing they were under attack and she was useless. A liability. The barrier protected her from the first explosion, but the force of the shake was plenty to send her tumbling to the ground where she would not be able to get up from on her own. As the pain in her back exponentially grew, her senses began to blur apart. Words weren't making sense, her vision was failing. It felt like dying, a feeling she was all too unfortunately familiar with. Sounds became just ringing. The voices were gone, she could see crimson on the ground around her. As her sight began to go black, she could faintly see things moving around all of a sudden. Meanwhile, Naomi had abandoned her faux-wheelchair near instantly and was up and about moving people inward who couldn't move faster themselves. As she pushed a party-goer in closer towards Rainbow, she noticed Sai going for Annette. Heh, she supposed he did respect her after all. He was too far though. "Sai! I've got her! Get the others!" Naomi commanded, using her natural tone of voice instead of her simulation of Annette's. Quickly, she propelled herself to Annette who was collapsed on the floor and bleeding. Naomi knew that stupid machine was a bad idea. Sure it offered a chance for Annette to walk on her own, but it was hardly even a prototype. The thing was riddled with bugs and issues. After picking her up and moving her to safety, Naomi quickly tore the back of her own jacket that Annette had been wearing at the time off to reveal the metallic device gripped into Annette's spine. Blood oozed from the punctures where the machine was defecting. Angrily, Naomi pressed the large fail-safe button near it's base and ripped the thing off her sister, tossing it aside angrily. With that out of the way, Naomi took the remainder of her jacket and wrapped it around Annette's chest to create pressure and bandage the wounds. With Annette all treated, Naomi lifted her sister to her chest and held her, waiting for the next plan of action. A massive part of her wanted to just blast off out of here and take her and her sister far away back to Steel City, but everyone was in danger here. Naomi was a Titan and her teammates were in danger here. She wouldn't hear the end of it if Annie knew she flat-out abandoned the West Titans to die. With Annette limply hung on her shoulder, clothed with only a torn up blue jacket, Naomi stood her ground, ready to act.

Portia was really confused with Serenity's sudden outburst, still not knowing the extent of all of the Titans' powers. Sure, she had seen little blurbs about how they were used to save people in the newspapers and everything, but this was the first time she had actually spent much time with any of them. She did know what Rainbow could do, though, and whatever would constitute a giant barrier, it had to be bad. The warning did not come soon enough, as shortly after the words were out of Princess Leia's mouth, the first missile hit. The tower shook from the impact, and Portia quickly grabbed the counter near her to steady her feet. Why had she said the National Guard? The Titans were peaceful with the government, city, state, and national. They didn't have time to dwell on the motives as chunks of ceiling were starting to fall.
Batgirl didn't need much encouraging, as once the walls started to fall, she wanted to get the hell out of the way. Just narrowly avoiding being crushed by falling ceiling, she jumped out of the way, landing in a roll to miss more debris. "No dip, Sherlock." Portia mumbled and rolled her eyes as she ran to get closer to Chae, wanting to be under her dome. "Why the hell are we getting shot at by the NATIONAL GUARD? I thought you guys were on good terms with the government!" Batgirl quickly braided her hair to the side, and pulled her hood up. It wasn't her costume, but it was as close as she was going to get right now. "Hacking into their radio frequency..." A few taps and swipes, and she was in.
What she saw was not what she had been expecting. Several arrest warrants popped up for each member of the Titans West team, along with Titans East, and even several Young Justice members. What the hell was this? "Guys, we need to get out of here. They want to bring us in. They will bring us in if we don't get out." A few more swipes, and her heart sunk. "They're working with the JCPD. We're not safe in this city." Her mother was at the front of it. Why? Was it really that important to the former Batgirl to find out who had stolen her former identity?
There was someone else helping them, though. Someone else heading things, and they weren't National Guard or police. Batgirl pulled up another program, and set the tracker. She was going to find who was doing this and stop them before anyone got killed. This was too far.

In a matter of moments several things had already gone wrong - her stupid 'teammate' who was never around, Sai, ran out before her barrier completely covered the walls and doors, intending to get his equipment and 'distract' the heavily armed and missile using military force that was assaulting the tower, her leader seized up on the ground and had to have a device ripped out of her back, and was bleeding badly, Naomi looked like she was going to kill everything involved in hurting Annette - not that Chae disagreed, a bit of red did flare up on her costume as she watched Annette fall. Her heart wanted to run over and check on Annette, but she knew she had more important things to do. Batgirl's calls of what she was doing were mostly ignored - finding out what was happening was good and all, but Chae needed to keep people safe now.Boom! Another explosion from above them, the only one who saw anything being Sai - half of the room he was in was suddenly gone in an explosion, shrapnel and building material flew every direction, some of it pelting the poor hero, luckily not injuring him too badly for how close he was - clearly he had the devil's own luck. The explosion prompted a determined Chae, fearful, to move - "Try to keep her still!" She shouted at Naomi as she ran at the end of the barrier near the windows, a door opening in it as she charged through it, ducking into a shoulder charge right through the large living room window. The yellow energy construct room remained tied to one hand, floating along with her, dragging the non-Sai party-goer's out the window, shattering the rest of the windows along with it, holding them aloft in the ball of yellow energy. Inside the bubble they seemed to move without friction - despite how quickly she dragged them, they mostly remained in place, barely jostling. As she briefly fell through the air, a rainbow coalesced at her feet, and she shot upwards instead, searching for where the missing teammate might be. As she spotted Sai in the bit of still exploded building, she swiped her free hand towards him, a large yellow energy fist flying at him, opening to sweep him up before dragging him out of the building. She couldn't afford to be gentle, the movement was easily disorienting at the least and sickening at the most. But as she dragged him out of the building and into the open air, the fist surrounded him, turning into a see through yellow bubble, much smaller than the one tied to her right hand. "Stop running off!" She shouted as loud as she could - not that it could be heard over the din below them. Since they'd emerged, automatic weapons had been firing up towards them, reflecting off the bubbles of light, blunted by Chae's costume to only be bruising. She didn't have time to worry about being hurt though, the pain was dulled by adrenaline. She looked over the devastation - the two overhangs that formed the T were gone, and chunks were missing from the tower, the metal framing exposed to air. It was clear that the entire thing would collapse any second. And then she turned away - objections ignored by those she carried, as she quickly sped through the air, rainbow behind her as she flew with the rest of the team guarded by the bubbles. She couldn't enter one of her own, not while saving Sai. She was exposed as she flew, costume only doing so much. BOOM! It was only a moment, a brief second as they passed over the beach, reaching the city just barely - Chae hadn't seen it coming, and any screams of warning didn't reach her in time. A missile hit her square in the back, it burned at her skin, it ripped the flesh with shrapnel, its impact cracked bones. A million thoughts in her mind at once, she rocketed towards the ground, screaming in her head to hold on, to last just a few more seconds. She held onto the shields, keeping them powered even as she fell to the ground. And then she crashed, a crater forming under her where she did, the bottom of it already pooling with her blood. The shields faltered and then disappeared as she lost consciousness, releasing the heroes at the edge of the city, safely deposited to the ground, Rainbow's light generated costume gone, her Halloween costume burned and ripped away from her body, the edges of the remaining fabric still on fire. But the sound of helicopters was behind them, and they were still being followed. The hacked radios echoed orders to capture the downed 'heroes', and take them into custody. 879 words | y'all know who you are | costume | see? he cares! |
Time felt slow around the archer. He brought his compound bow up, an arrow notched into place. He took a breath and let it out as he pulled the bowstring taut. He knew that when he released, the National Guard would know where the arrow had come from. They'd be after him, giving his teammates time to get away, giving Chae and Annette time to get to safety. He didn't think he'd escape this without injury, if alive at all. He didn't want to die. He had so much he still needed to do. He had people he needed to hurt. But protecting his teammates was the priority,
Sai let the arrow fly. It sliced through the air and planted itself right by a tank. Barely a second later, the polymer inside it exploded and expanded, covering over half of a tank. He was about to grab another arrow when the next missile hit.
He didn't even have time to spit out a curse. He was suddenly on the ground, half of his spare room gone. He stared, feeling the nip of the wind from outside. The raw emotion was plain to see on his face. To say he was scared would have been an understatement. The Tower - just like the one in Steel City - was like another home for him. The Titans were the closest to a family he currently had. He felt like he was going to loose both. He felt like the child playing hero.
The next thing he knew, he was in a yellow bubble. He looked to see Chae, to give her a grateful look, but it vanished when he saw she wasn't protected. He quickly scrambled to his feet, placing his hand against the bubble's inner-lining.
"Chae!" he said, the fear obvious in his voice. He didn't use his communicator. He wasn't sure if she could even hear him. His grip on his compound bow tightened, his knuckles under his gloves whitening.
She needed to get to get inside a force-field. She needed to get to safety. Why wasn't she shielding herself? Could she not? He looked around the bubble he was in before frantically looking back at her.
"Chae! Get in here!" he called to her, practically pleading, begging her to get to some sense of safety. He couldn't let anything happen to her. She was the newbie on the team. He should have been able to protect her.
And then she got hit. The world seemed to slow down even more.
"CHAE!!"
No, no, no, no, no, no.
He had to get to her. He had to protect her. As soon as they were on the ground and the bubbles were gone, he was moving, stumbling on his feet. Each breath he took was shaky. His heart hammered in his chest. He felt like he was moving sluggishly, as if he was trying to run through thick snow, when in reality, he had never moved faster.
He should have been able to protect her. He shouldn't have left the group. As he ran he slung his compound bow over his shoulder. He slide down into the crater. She was just a kid. He should have protected her.
He fell to his knees beside her, yanking off his jacket and using it to gently pat down the fires before wrapping it around her small frame. His hands shook, his shoulders shook. He reached down, gently brushing hair out of her face.
"Chae?" he said softly. His voice cracked and he paused for a second before he was able to speak again. "Hang in there, hero. You're going to be okay. We're going to patch you up. It's not that bad, just a quick trip to an infirmary." It was worst than he would ever tell her. He didn't want her to panic.
"Just stay with me, okay?" he added gently, "You can't fall asleep." He took in a shaky breath and let it out, looking at her. He could pick her up and take her somewhere - where? Wasn't the Young Justice/Rider's Deck base on the docks? They should have an infirmary. He could pick her up and take her there, but what if he hurt her? What if he caused more harm?
"Somebody help!" he snapped over his shoulder before turning his attention back to Chae, "You're going to be okay. You're not going to die. It's not even that bad." He was lying. He didn't know if she would die or not. Her injuries looked bad. He wasn't even sure if she'd believe him. But he needed to keep her calm, keep her awake. There was a high chance she had a concussion and if she fell asleep, she might never wake up. That possibility scared him.
"You saved the day, Rainbow," he said, trying to keep her attention on him and not the pain she must have been in. "You're a hero. We're going to throw a big party just for you, I'll make sure of it. You're a true Titan." He was trying to keep his voice steady and nearly failing. He kept flashing back, seeing his mum's remains the day he'd found them.
He'd lost his mum, but he'd be damned if he lost Chae too.

While everyone else seemed to be panicking in the chaos, Constantine tried to be as cool as a cucumber. This was primarily due to one mantra repeating over and over in his mind. What would Han Solo do? What would Han Solo do? The answer, of course, was to act calm and rational and not be a hero. He hadn't needed to do anything while Chae held the shield up, and he watched while staying as close to Serenity as possible. Feeling the shockwaves, he shouted above the din, "Crummy weather we've been having lately. It's raining bloody missiles."
Still the spectator, Stephen could only idly sit by while the rest of the world disintegrated around him, and could helplessly watch as the Archer - was his name Sigh? Sign? Sai? - cradled his friend - Chae, chai, cay? - in his arms. The helicopters were closing in behind, and he knew they were all in trouble now that their shield was gone. In a moment of demonic divine inspiration, Stephen ran outside the group and drew a giant circle on the beach. Yelling above the helicopters, he waved everyone towards him, "I DON'T CARE IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN MAGIC IN A YOUNG GIRL'S HEART GET IN THE FOOKING CIRCLE." With that outburst, he pulled the pistol from his belt, pointed it at his own foot, and prayed aloud "Oh dear God I hope this works."
He muttered a bunch of Latin words, pulled the trigger, felt a pain in his foot, and suddenly a flash of light engulfed the circle. Everyone in the circle weren't on the beach anymore; they were surrounded by warehouses
Oh, and Constantine had a bullet-hole in his foot. That was the cost of blood for something that he needed blood for. Too bad there wasn't a goat to slaughter, but whatever works works right? Mentally, he made sure never to use that teleportation thing again before he passed out from the strain of transporting HOWMANYPEOPLE through a magical wormhole.
