*bzzzz bzzzzz bzzzz* Irazehls message flashed in vain across the screen of Athenas communicator. Floating in the sky above the gulf, there was no audience for it. The vibrations of the com reverberated across the strings that attached it to the makeshift weather balloon that was being carried by the wind. It had traveled farther up than intended only making it about half a mile into the gulf since Mathew had launched it from his bike. Meanwhile, at the desalination plant, local law enforcement was making contact with the super heroine. According to their reports it was a case of breaking and entering restricted areas, vandalization, and assault. They seemed to shrug off the situation as just the work of some vandal and seemed relaxed, though they had been forced to wear gas masks by a member of the cleaning crew. This particular member was finishing up taking samples from the water, and handing them to another whom was working some test tubes and other equipment at an impromptu desk before returning to lean on the tank, clearly not worried about the situation at all. The last of them seemed to be putting away other detection equipment, having given up. While two of the police on scene began begrudgingly setting up a perimeter to stop the escape of any possible fugitive in the area as warned by Shift, the titan was greeted by a man in yellow. "I'm sorry but if you are going to be here, I'm going to have to insist you wear a gas mask. Don't touch anything while you are in the contamination zone. Chemicals can be absorbed through skin contact. Seeing as you are apparently familiar with JCA we assume you understand the precautions."The man's voice, though distorted by the tinted face mask of the hazmat, spoke with experience even though the unit had just been formed recently in response to cleaning Mathews messes across Jump City. Perhaps he had experience in the field of containment before being hired for such a project. He didn't feel the need to explain their presence. He simply opened a locker style box, among its contents an extra suit and gas masks to spare. Meanwhile, Mathew was a hot mess. The Titans were here? They were supposed to be in steel city by now! At least the local law enforcement and cleaning crew had calmed down enough that they may leave soon, and he personally was more than a little annoyed at their slow pace as they got around to doing so. The Titans had tracked him down before they had given up looking for him. He needed to move fast and get things rolling. Staying cleverly out of view, he still had a trigger switch and a few supplies that should help him get through this. He had made sure to have more tricks up his sleeve. He frankly didn't give a damn about being captured or arrested, this plan was bigger than him, and he couldn't afford to be found out just yet. He did make a mistake however, as in a back office there was still a loose end. He had hidden an unconcious heap of a man stripped of identification and card key, made to look as if he had passed out at his desk from boredom. ~~~~~~~~~ Word: 554 Notes: Water- TAINTED, Main pump off Music: StampedeTags: @mari Athena 'Shift' Logan @reni

Serenity moved about the crowd playing the concerned citizen. She offered a word of comfort to workers and family members alike. Words like, "Our thoughts are with you," and, "I'm sure they'll be alright." Normally the blonde wasn't much of a people person but today it was necessary. It kept her from glaring over her shoulder at Irazehl. She did not appreciate being followed by the ninja, she understood it especially when he was the only titan to know about her history with Mathew. She had hoped the ninja would have forgotten that night, but it seemed the titans second in command had a very good memory. In situations where she had been followed she would normally have Sorina go peck them in the side of the head. It was a tried and tested method, when someone bothered her she sent a ghost out to pester them until she could slip away. Well there was a second part of that plan but she hadn't finished setting it up yet. If she had time she would have thought up something slightly less crude then run in and drag Mathew out of the line of fire, or an angry Athena, but she had started getting her plan together last night. There hadn't been much time to find the most elegant plan. She finished her circuit of the crowd as Athena started chatting with the officials. It was nice of her to distract them while the blonde grabbed some supplies off the back of the ambulance. It was nice that they left all the extra personal protection equipment in the back where it was easy to reach. Even the extra breathing masks which were normally harder to get to. "Your stealing from an ambulance now?" Serenity just rolled her eyes at the comment and set off the trigger she had been keeping on her. The smoke bombs she had placed inside different civilian's bags as she had walked through the crowd went off creating a rather large and moving smokescreen perfect for quickly putting on gloves the iso gown a breathing mask and goggles. She threw a few extra smoke screens out in the direction she was headed along with a rather pungent stink bomb in Athena's direction. She didn't want to be tracked down by scent. She took off at a jog at the police line. Now that she looked like a paramedic she was able to make it through the line after a quick description of a patient who had been down in the main building. It was out of her way but it was the easiest way for her to break through the line. Especially when she had set of a rather time consuming distraction for everyone to deal with. She had been keeping an eye on Mathew's future most of this morning. She wanted to be able to find him for a moment like right now. "Alright I know your mad but I need you to disable the trigger Mathew's holding." With a few quick instructions the very pissed off dove was off to take her anger out on the person she really wished could hear her rants. Irazehl was a bit unnerved when he didn't see anyone reaching down as if to check a cellphone, or say, a communicator. He had hoped Mathew would respond- thereby proving his theory.When nobody responded he began questioning if Mathew had really just left the site. It made no sense for him to make his escape on foot, leaving his bike behind. It made even less sense for the personnel at the plant had scared him off, he had taken down entire squads of policemen before. Not to say he killed, but rather, left them in no fighting shape whether through tearful horror or manic giggling. Irazehls heart skipped a beat when a response came on his communicator- Mathew finally gave himself away. NOPE. Athena was safe, Mari was still stuck up. Everything was normal, that was a relief. Of course he wouldn't contact them until he was absolutely sure of his theory, lest he spread even more disinformation. Irazehl swiped up on the screen of his communicator, bringing up the attachment. He was in no shock to find that Mathew had ditched the communicator, he had done a good job of sending people in the wrong direction so far. It also explained why he didn't respond to being called out, though it was mostly psychological warfare to make him reveal himself. He looked up from his communicator, he was glad to see Athena arrive on the scene, just below him too. dropping only to catch a branch by his legs gracefully, the hooded and masked face dropped down close to Athena's albeit upside down. The entire movement was near noiseless and Irazehl had merely accepted the fact that he would always scare her when he revealed himself. He was confident that she wouldn't be able to land a blow on him, an instinct to being surprised, many first thoughts would be to punch whatever caused the startling. She was stronger yes, even in her human form, but he was faster. "Glad to see you're safe."He silently enjoyed seeing her fur stand up on end when he surprised her. He forewent covering her mouth to stop her from yelping out loud, she hadn't been appreciative of that in the past and she was certainly used to his stealthy behavior by now. He released his legs flipping down to land on his feet. Following her towards the scene, he slipped in and out of sight via speed. "Mathews close, I'm certain of it. Serenity..." Irazehl thumbed towards her overt location as he seemed to appear beside Athena again now at the lockerbox, this one needn't bear explaining. He didn't like admitting it but "I haven't been able to get a visual on Mathew, and tracking would suggest he is somewhere on concrete. Maybe you could sniff him out?"Irazehl of course had kept Serenity in the corner of his eye for some time now, and seeing her put on protective gear made him nervous. She knew something was about to happen, soon. "Uh, we might want to mask up soon-now" Irazehl said, the gas mask seeming to appear on his face. He noted, the supposedly purified air tasted pungent, even through the filter of the gas mask. Odd. The sound of something being punctured was followed by a dull hiss as the non contaminated area began to fill up with gas. Mathew was making his move and now sniffing him out was out of the question. As Irazehl watched the crowd scatter away from the gas, he made way to do the same, staying on the edge of the gas to mask his visibility, he moved into the contaminated zone, knowing he was getting closer and closer to Mathew. ~~~~~~~~~~ HINT: If Mathew had kept the communicator on him, he would appear to be right in front of the two heros.Words: 641 Notes: Mad props if you figure it out before the big reveal Tagged: Athena 'Shift' Logan @reni @mari @mathew Edit: Spelling corrections

athena logan Shift -- Titan leader & Shape-Shifter "I'm sorry but if you are going to be here, I'm going to have to insist you wear a gas mask…”
With a nod, Athena took the mask from the man offering it - nearly dislodging the thing when she jumps, Irazehl’s upside-down face appearing at about head-height. Fumbling the mask, she shot one elbow towards him -- her body moving quicker than her brain. When her sharp elbow didn’t smack against chest or nose, Shift relaxed out of the instinctive tense wince she’d hunched into, partially turning around to shoot Nightshade an annoyed look. “Nightshade, Jesus, you scared me!” She whispered at him, keeping her tone low - the news crews were focusing on the cops and the chemical clean-up crew made specifially for The Jump City Alchemist and people like him (if more ever came around), and she wanted to keep it that way for as long as possible.
Watching with some envy as her second gracefully dropped and twisted to land on his feet, she nodded along as he spoke, updating her on what he knew - and letting him know she’d do her best to follow Mathews’ scent. Hopefully it hadn’t been mixed up too badly by the people milling around. “I’ll do my best. No promises.” Even if it was stale, she could still follow it from the bike that had been found in the bushes; as good a place to start with as any. Curious that he’d left it, though, she thought. His powers didn’t let him teleport or fly; maybe he’d had someone pick him up? Mathew more than most villians would have been in a position to know people who owed him favors and wouldn’t ask questions. Leaving a dented bike behind would be a raindrop in the ocean for a man who could turn gravel into gold. “I wonder why that bike -- uh oh!” She started to speak up...
And then - of course, because why could things be simple in Jump City? - things started happening. Smoke billowed up from nowhere - smoke bombs, Shift realized as she hurried to put her mask on. She’d seen them used by her teammates and allies, but had never seen them so close up. Her sharp eyes and nose would be all-but-useless in that kind of massive mist; and some of it looked different, as well...but why? Then it got closer to her, and even through the mask her nose could smell something was off - nevermind the disgusted faces people who got caught in it were making. Stink bomb, she realized. Or something very similar. Either way, it meant she couldn’t take off her mask - not only would she be unable to track Mathew, Shift knew she’d also get a better-than-human nose-full of the smelly gas; she’d be lucky if she didn’t have to retreat from the scene completely, or throw up. As Irazehl darted away towards who-knew-what, Shift retreated at a slower pace.
The professionals were either trying to make everyone disperse for fear of contamination or infection - CDC - or for fear of riot or panic - cops. They could handle the small crowd - she need to help the only other Titan around. One more worried look at the crowd, and Shift was following Nightshade, jaguar form a green-black splotch of movement and muscle as she hurried to catch up, the faint traces of smoke and stink quickly being left behind as she tracked stale Alchemist and fresh ninja. It was time. Cracking fizzling and a pop as the filaments standing between anyone wearing a gas mask and a smorgasbord of hallucinogens, fear toxin, or knockout gas finally broke. They had been designed by Mathew to break after a certain time, and stealthily placed in the gas masks as he had distributed them in the disguise of a cleaning crewmember. No longer would they provide the wearer with life giving oxygen, but rather a direct line to whatever Mathew wanted them drugged on. The one law enforcement officer on site that hadn't been sent to set up a perimeter was one of the unfortunate ones. The vivid hallucinations gripped him quickly, giant flaming spiders were now shouting at him in a demonic dead language where there once was two of the teen titans. He began screaming himself, though incoherent and gibberish, his next action was equally terrifying; drawing his Beretta and firing it into his hallucination. This was what that switch was waiting for. One of the cleaning crew, Tom Buran by his nametag, lifted up a switch and twisted the key into the on position. Almost all at once, the police dpartment was filling up with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) at an alarming rate. The cleaning crew was next in mere seconds; one fell to his knees crawling about and drooling like a toddler. The other, lay lamp into his chair. The last of them, same as the one who distributed the masks, smashed the switch underfoot before being grabbed by toddler man about midwaist. The toddler-like man seemed to find great amusement in the shiny screen of "Tom's" hazmat visor and ripped the hood off in the resulting struggle between the two. Mathew. His face was now in plain sight. Evading the last of the grabbing hands, he turned tail and ran towards the building with the control room for the water pumps. ~~~~~~~~ Water Tainted Main Pump Off Police on Site Compromised Police on reserve high as balls on laughing gas Cleaning Crew Incapacitated ~~~~~~~~ Words: 339 Notes: eh sorry for the late reply Tagged: Athena 'Shift' Logan @mari @reni @irazehl

SERENITY SWANSON know it all Sorina swore loudly as Mathew hit the switch before she was able to get there. "I can't believe she still has feelings for you." Despite the fact that Matt couldn't hear a word and that she could quite sum up her feelings of irritation at the idiot in front of her she still kept on squawking at his head as he raced off towards wherever he was headed. It wasn't quite as shocking to see the brunette Serenity running toward them coming from the direction of presumably wherever Mathew was previously going.
Serenity had already been in the water control room and had done a very good job at destroying most of the circuitry that controlled the main pump. She had planned just in case she hadn't managed to get here and stop Mathew in time but luckily all her preplanning hadn't been all that needed. She hadn't wanted to face the deaths she hadn't managed to stop ahead of time, nor did she want Mathew to become a killer even he wasn't the one pulling the trigger himself. She put a hand to her back as she turned, and yup she had pulled some more stitches. She was not looking forward to going through that while she was still conscious.
She spotted Mathew and there are so many different emotions running through her right at that moment, she was always happy to see him but this time she also wanted to punch him for his hair brained plan to bring the city to another form of enlightenment and while she was glad he hadn't changed to much she just wished he could find any better hobby then something like this ridiculous scheme. She hissed under her breath, she could figure out what she was feeling later. Right now they needed to be anywhere but where Athena and Irazehl would be showing up to intercept them, "Shut up Sorina." The birds constant tirade of Mathew's character was getting on her nerves and she hadn't been listening to it for all that long. She raced up to Mathew ignoring the pain from her back as she approached. "We need to go. Now." She grabbed his wrist and started running towards a sewer entrance nearby. Thankfully being a water plant there was more then one to choose from. It was one thing she had planned first before even starting to warn people about today. How to get Mathew out of this situation without a green Elephant running them down. She did appreciate how much the titans did for the city. Right now she just wanted to get out of there without much trouble.

What the hell is this taste in my mouth? It tastes famili-
The thought didn't hang in Irazehls mind long before he saw the glimmer of metal to his left. A blue uniformed man was moving to level his gun at Athena. Adrenaline took its course, seeping into his veins destroying a drowsiness he hadn't even realized was there. He pushed off the ground, feeling weightless against the spinning world.
*BANG* The smoke excaped the barrel of the Barretta 9mm only to be lost as the gas overcame it, the light casting shadowy silhouettes against the cloud. *BANG* Smoke parted by the wind coming off of Irazehl alone as he broke the sound barrier.
The light quickly caught up with the bullet, offering a glimmer that lasted long enough to hint at its trajectory. Irazehl seemed to reappear as the bullets momentum stopped him, his arm flying back, his shoes crunching against the concrete. Molten lead steamed from the metal plating of his right handed gauntlet, as he held it away from him. "Don't try that again." Irazehl warned from behind his gas mask. The voice meant to sound intimidating but was muffled and apparently had little effect as the officer continued to try to fire his weapon.
*click* *click* Jammed.
Probably had something to do with the shuriken lodged in the metal of the firing chamber. When did that get in there? One could possibly blame a ninja. A tight curve thrown while traveling supersonic? Perhaps. It didn't matter now, it had provided the window of opportunity needed. A veritable tsunami of fist, steel, and molten lead crashed through the glass of the officers gas mask as Irazehl politely returned the bullet to the gunman. To his mouth, to be specific.
"I said don't"
The officer hadn't even been drugged, how? The mask. Irazehl ripped his off in a flash. Inside? A busted capsule? That taste? It was opiods. That was good luck drawing that in the narcotic roulette. Izzles had those for breakfast. Literally. The ambient gas in the environment? Non-toxic, designed to obscure visibility. His mind was now traveling fast from the intense adrenaline, not forming complete sentences, yet complete thoughts. "Mask! Take Off!" Irazehl mustered in Athena's direction as he grew increasingly incoherent, his eyes watering from the dense smoke "Mathew! Ran from to there!"

athena logan Shift -- Titan leader & Shape-Shifter She barely noticed the chaos around her as she ran; to the Titan, it was all background noise, only noticeable as it got in her way. Not a good idea, generally, but Athena knew she had back-up - the kind she’d trust her life with, if it came to it. She couldn’t have asked for better back up than Irazehl, save for maybe Superman, but that was a big stretch. Besides, Nightshade was more fun to work with - she’d always thought that the Big Blue Boyscout would be intimidating, although other people who’d worked with him said he was kind, for all of his size and power. She’d rather work with her age group - and generation! Most of whom were already in Jump City - and who no doubt were scrambling to figure out what to do about the water situation. Meanwhile, she was just hoping Nightshade’s reflexes kept up, because green predatory animals were big glaring targets for most people.
Speaking of… She could hear him shouting something - something about Mathew, and masks. Well, she could deal with her own mask when she shifted back to her human form - right now, she could deal with him in her jaguar form. The heroine had adopted it when she’d started to follow Irazehl a few minutes ago; she could move low to the ground, away from the worst of the smoke and flailing, shouting cops, and even if her powers colored the jungle cat green, it was still a naturally dark, splotchy green. Difficult to see among trees and bushes in its’ natural habit (and colored correctly) - she figured it would work well against the swirling smoke and general panicked state of everyone who had been hit with whatever it was Mathew had cooked up that time.
Padded paws skidding against the tile of the building as she dashed after Mathew, Shift hit the far wall and bounced off, half-falling over as she tried to over-correct. Jaguar wasn’t the animal she spent a lot of time as - but she could feel it trying to work, trying to help. She just had to think of Mathew as ‘prey’, and… Well, not let the jaguar get carried off. Right now, she put that nose to work, sniffing as she trailed his scent down the hallway. Adrenaline. Fear. Surprise? That made the heroine blink. He was the mastermind behind this little plan of his, wasn’t he? That was what they had all been assuming. So why was he surprised? Tags: @mathew, @irazehl, @reni | Words: 413 | Credit: Delusional

Derek Faralta quivered behind the gun. Never as a police officer had he ever encountered something so terrifying. The flaming spiders were now advancing on him, speaking in demonic tongues, acid spewing from their horrible mouths. Without any rational thinking to accompany his actions he impulsively drew his weapon, a 9mm baretta, standard issue of JCPD. His hands were shaking as he squeezed the trigger.
*Bang* Nothing.
Of course, nightmares can't be slain by a single bullet. His shaking only worsened as he voided his bowels in terror, hiding behind his weapon as if it were a sort of barrier between him and his foe. It was when his weapon failed inexplicably that he knew that this truly was a nightmare and perhaps he would wake up soon, the only hope he had as his foe seemed to advance on him instantaneously, all eight eyes peering down at him horribly. He opened his mouth to finally choke out a scream. The last thing he felt was his jaw parting ways with his head before everything went black and he collapsed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Racing through the fluorescent lit halls, Mathews heart was beating fast. He rounded a corner when he heard the sound of claws scattering on the tiles. Of course, Athena was after him and rather than look behind to see whatever horrifying thing was now pursuing him, he ducked into the main control room. He opened up a wooden door and closed a steel one, as it welded itself to the door frame. Such a barrier should buy him some time, at least he hoped.
"Thanks for the chair, pal" He said, pushing the unconscious security guard out of his chair, his hands nimbly taking the card key off his person, before being swiped to log into the control panel almost at the same instant as he sat down. His right arm was stopped as it reached for the manual override, a simple lever with a horizontal hand grip. Looking to see who grabbed him, he almost wasn't surprised. Serenity was waiting for him. He never was good at checking his corners.
"We need to go. Now."
With her other hand, she was pointing to a hole in the wall, leading to a sewer opening, the very method through which he had infiltrated the water plant. Of course, her only wish was to get him out safe. How kind. She should have known his choice though.
"I'm sorry" Grabbing the switch with his left hand instead, he pulled it down into the 'on' position, while changing the composition of the metal to something a bit more brittle, he snapped it off in that position. "I have to do this. For the good of everyone."
Knowing that Athena was on the other side of the door and he didn't want Serenity to be incriminated along with him, he yelled. "BLAST IT SERENITY YOU WONT FOIL ME THIS TIME!"
He looked at a likely now furious Serenity, half worried but knowing that she in the end would understand. He was probably going to be high on the fugitive list now, and he didn't know when they'd be able to see one another again. He pulled her in close as he stood, he hand resting on her waist. "Hey, it'll be ok. But I need you to trust me." Whether through the excitement of the situation or through some crazy sense of romance, he chose this moment to finally kiss her. It was intense and passionate but short lived as he parted the embrace far too soon. "Now I need you to chase me"
He took off down the escape route. The last thing he wanted was for Serenity to become wanted like him. It wasn't a lifestyle he would'nt wish on his worst enemy, let alone somebody he loved.
| "I'm sorry. I have to do this. For the good of everyone."
Serenity leveled a furious look at Mathew, they didn't have time for this if they were going to get him out of there before Athena came barging down the door. Yes she had managed to cripple most of the main systems but there were still a few left, nothing that would cause any serious damage. No deaths no extra work for her just a headache and a rather large argument with Athena that was to come later. It didn't help that she was still in the doghouse with Athena about this entire situation. The yelling she could take, Mathew being a killer wasn't something she was about to deal with.
"BLAST IT SERENITY YOU WONT FOIL ME THIS TIME!"
Tomorrow she would find it sweet that he was trying to protect her. Right now she found the entire thing utterly infuriating. Just because she thought that this plan was stupid didn't mean she wanted him thrown in jail. "For the good of everyone? Do you know how many people I had to warn in order for you not to kill anyone?" She had more to her tirade but Mathew managed to interrupt her. Not that she was fighting being closer to him either.
"Hey, it'll be ok. But I need you to trust me."
She raised a hand to either slap him or punch him she wasn't quite sure. The kiss was unexpected she was spending most of her energy keeping track of Athena, Irazehl, and the many people effected by today. She needed to let some things slide if she didn't want to fall into a trance. That and she hadn't been all that afraid of what Matt would do. If she had been paying attention, she probably would have responded faster.
As it was she found herself caught up in the moment rather then another future. Just this moment became her world and she threw all her swirling emotions into it. Her fear of her own future, her worry for him, her confusion about being caught in-between her different worlds, and her love for him drove her on in this moment. She found herself pulling back and finally registered Sorina yelling at her over her shoulder though she simply ignored the bird.
"Now I need you to chase me"
Oh the man was insufferable.
The different futures she had been ignoring came rushing back to her. Fine he could just ignore the fact that she could help him and they could just do this his way. She shot a glare over her shoulder at Sorina as she took off after Mathew, "MATHEW WHERE THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING? AND SORINA SHUT UP." She was ignoring the fact that she felt like she had torn quite a few stitches as she raced after him, Yes she was very pissed off at the entire situation especially when she had better things to be doing with her time then stopping Mathew of all people from killing hundreds.
Serenity tore through the sewers after him ignoring the pain in her body for about as long as she could, there was only so much she could do to keep up with him in the state she was in. "Serenity you're bleeding, get out of here before that gets infected." Sorina had a point.
The blond slid to a stop wincing as she twisted her back uncomfortably. "You're right I can't catch him." Didn't mean she wouldn't pop up to yell at him later. The dove would rather enjoy that particular conversation.
